- About Us -

The Laurel Board of Trade, Inc. is comprised of more than 100 members with small businesses located in Laurel, Maryland.  Our membership includes retail merchants, restaurateurs, and professional service providers.  Among the current membership are bakeries, beauty salons & spas, auto dealers & auto Repair, banks, consignment shops, entertainment, restaurants, locksmiths, dentists, accountants, physicians, attorneys and the list goes on!The Laurel Board of Trade, Inc. works in partnership with the City of Laurel, County, and State to help our local merchants in the common goal to keep the commercial vitality in Laurel.

The mission of The Laurel Board of Trade, Inc. is to promote and enhance small business development and economic growth within the Laurel area which specifically includes the Main Street Historic District, City of Laurel, North Laurel, South Laurel, West Laurel, and Maryland City.  In general, all areas with a “Laurel” mailing address.

Matthew Coates, Photography By Madison – Chairman

Matthew Coates was born in Baltimore, Maryland, attended Baltimore City Public Schools and graduated from Edmondson High School in June 1982.  He attended Hartford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland from September 1982 to May 1983.  In August 1984 he enrolled in Elizabeth City State University located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina, where he majored in Art with a concentration in Photography.  He graduated with honors from Elizabeth City State University in May 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
During his tenure at Elizabeth City State University, he was a member of the Art Club, and played as the Offensive Center on the University’s Football Team for four years, serving as Captain during his senior year.  Matthew served, as a teacher’s assistant during his senior year – teaching a photography class for one semester.
Upon graduation he secured positions in Photography with several major corporations.  He joined Lifetouch Incorporated in 1992 and remained with the company until 2002 when he became owner of his company, Photography and Photographic Services by Madison.  Matthew served as a member of two organizations – Friends of Laurel and the Business Network.  He has expressed great interest in the progress of business leadership and success of businesses in the city of laurel.  Matthew’s photographic services include: family portraits, weddings, school portraits, passports a variety of celebrations and social events.
Matthew loves all types of sports including football and golfing.  He has participated in several golf tournaments.  Matthew loves to interact with people and is genuinely interested in extending himself to assist others.  He is a member of the People’s Community Baptist Church in Silver Spring, MD where he has served with the Usher Ministry since 1995. Matthew is married and has one daughter.
Michelle DeLorenzo Arsenault, Stitching Pretty, Ltd. - President 

Michelle is native to Laurel, high school graduate of St. Vincent Pallotti, she achieved a BSN from the University of Maryland and is currently practicing for Dimensions Health Care at Laurel Regional Hospital as an Administrative Nursing Coordinator.  A member of the Laurel Volunteer Rescue Squad since 1980, currently serving as on the Board of Directors.  Married to Mark Arsenault with 2 adult sons, Michael and Matthew.  Michelle opened Stitching Pretty, Ltd., her needlework and custom framing shop in 1989 and is now currently operating on the World Wide Web along with Gail Reinhardt selling original designs internationally.  She also designs and creates original pieces of jewelry in fine silver and semi-precious stones, available at local shows and the World Wide Web. Michelle has been involved with and a Director of the Laurel Board of Trade since 1993 and is currently serving as President of the Laurel Board of Trade.
Bernard (Bernie) Robinson, PNC Bank- Vice President

Bernie is currently Vice-President & Branch Manager of the Laurel Main Street Office of PNC Bank.  He has enjoyed over 30 years of community banking, assisting his business clients grow their companies, and volunteering with various civic groups.  Bernie is currently active as Treasurer for the Francis Scott key Chapter of the Association of the United States Army, a member of the Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce, and also the Fort Meade Alliance.
Janet Able, Retired from PNC Bank- PNC Bank (retired) Treasurer

Jan is married to Ron Able for 50 years, has three children Angela, Brian & Christine, and has lived in Laurel since 1971.  She was employed by Citizen’s National Bank on Main Street in Laurel in 1974 and worked her way to Bank Manager in 1985.  She continued working as Bank Manager with the PNC merger in 2007 until February 2010 when she retired.  Jan has been involved with the Laurel Community in a wide variety of things over the years and is currently Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the City of Laurel Retirement Plans, and is a former member on the Board of Directors for LARS (Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services).  Her hobbies include gardening, reading and going to fun places with her 2 grandsons, Josh and Nick.
Jan was born and raised in Baltimore but also lived in upstate New York, Lexington, KY and West Chester, Pa before moving back to Maryland in 1969.  She attended the University of Kentucky.

 

Laurie Blitz, Laurie’s Something Special Coffee- Director 

Laurie’s Something Special coffee is a Gourmet Coffee business where you get the highest quality coffee in regular and original flavors.  Laurie is involved with many local organizations in the Laurel Community.  She is currently a Director with The Laurel Board of Trade, the Women’s Club of Laurel and the Laurel Lions Club, past President of the Friends of Laurel’s Historic Main Street, Laurel Civic Improvement Committee and is currently Chairman of the City of Laurel’s Historic District Commission.  Laurie has been an active member of the Laurel Business Community for years.  Her family has owned Laurel Automotive Supply on Main Street since 1945.

Lee Brangan, Director

Lee Brangan is the President of Patuxent Financial Group.  His company provides an assortment of investment services and financial planning opportunities.  Lee is a long time member of the Laurel community and is an active member of the Fourth of July Committee and Laurel Senior Friendship Club.
 

J. Donald Henyon- Director/Life Member-        

In 1954 Don Henyon began his career in banking at Suburban Trust Company as a management trainee. In 1958 he was Asst. Vice President of Commercial Lending at the National Bank of Maryland.  From 1964 - 1998, Mr. Henyon was employed by Citizen’s National Bank on Main St, in Laurel as Controller, Senior Vice President, Executive Vice President, President, Chairman, and Chief Executive Officer.   From 1998 until 2003 he remained as Bank Advisor with Citizen’s National Bank.      Don Henyon was born in Washington, DC, married his Life Partner Jean and has 2 children. From 1943 – 1954 Don served on the U.S. Navy Pacific Destroyer RDM, 1st Class, University of Maryland Air National Guard, and U.S. Air Force, 113thFW-61stFIS.     Don graduated with a degree from Rutgers Graduate School in 1967.     Don Henyon has been very involved in Laurel’s community for many years; Baltimore Washington Chamber of Commerce- Treasurer/Chairman, Baltimore Washington Information Centers on Interstate 95- Chairman, Bank Administration Insurance – President, Fort Meade Commanders Group- President, Greater Laurel Improvement Association- Treasurer, City of Laurel mayor’s Committee Historic District Commission, Baltimore Washington Foundation- Secretary/Treasurer 1995-Present, Laurel Board of Trade 1995 – Present.

Marilyn Johnson, The Marilyn Johnson Sewing & Design Studio –
Director 


Thirteen years ago, Marilyn Johnson combined a life-long love of sewing and crafting with all the other skills picked up over the years and opened her business The Marilyn Johnson Sewing and Design Studio.  She produces anything involving fabric from custom garments and alterations to window treatment to sewing lessons.  Her specialty is creating costumes for stage, movies and re-enactors either as a custom order or as rentals from her extensive Costume Closet. Now a nationally recognized expert in costuming and sewing instruction, Marilyn’s clients include the White House Historical Association and the Baltimore Raven Mascots.  Her work has appeared on TV and at the Smithsonian as well as many local stages. Marilyn was honored in 2007 as one of the Top 100 MBE’s by the State of Maryland and in 2009 was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Another Approach Enterprises.
  Sean LeVere, Latin Image Salon, Director-

Sean has worked in the printing industry for over 25 years.  He is a graduate of California State University of Long Beach, California.  He is a member of Cal State Alumni Association, 101 Positive Men Association and the Laurel Rotary Club.  He is active in the Catonsville Community Association and the Laurel School Systems.  Sean enjoys golfing, fishing and collecting older cars.  He is the father of one daughter.

 

Robert J. Mignon- Director 

Bob Mignon has lived in the Laurel Community since 1992.  Mr. Mignon’s business career began in 1972 with his first full time employer, General Foods Corporation.  He spent nine years in various capacities with General Foods and then went to work for Kraft Food Service.  His career with Kraft included rising to the position of General Manager of distribution centers in Florida and Seattle, Washington.  In 1994 Mr. Mignon implemented his lifelong dream of owning his own business and purchased a Minuteman Press franchise in Beltsville.  In 2003 he opened a second Minuteman Press on Main Street in Laurel. Bob Mignon is a Board Member of the Laurel Lions Club, a member of the Baltimore Washington Corridor Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Beltsville Business Association, Business Networking International and the Laurel Historical Society.
  Kriss Phipps - Director

Kriss Phipps, a wife and mother of a beautiful daughter and currently a student of Howard County Community College who has been residing in Laurel, MD, for the past nineteen years.  Kriss Phipps had worked for Reality, Inc. on Main Street for ten years before getting laid off last April.  Since then she has been an outstanding citizen in her community and an exemplary woman to her co-workers.  Her outgoing character enables her to become interested and concerned for the lives of others.  She is a caring and sharing person, going out of her way for family and friends.  Kriss Phipps has decided to continue her education and is completing courses at Howard Community College.  She hopes to find a job soon and obtain a degree as a Surgical Technician in the future. For now she is excited to be given a chance to continue volunteering with the Laurel Board of Trade, Inc. and is hopeful of a continued bright future for home, work and her community.


Deborah Randall, Venus Theatre – Director

Deborah Randall has been a resident of Laurel, MD since 1986.  Randall grew up in Prince George’s County where she graduated from Friendly High School.  She graduated Cum Laude from UMBC with a degree in theatrical studies.  Ms. Randall formed Venus Theatre in 2000.  Although located in Laurel, MD, the Venus Theatre has also rented spaces to perform works in Washington, DC, New York City, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Maryland.  In addition, Randall is a published playwright, accomplished director, seasoned performer and is slowly but surely becoming a respected producer in the professional theatre community.  Through the Venus Theatre, Ms. Randall hopes to reach out and offer classes, workshops and camps for the entire community while continuing to bring in heavy-hitting and award winning playwrights from and around the globe while applying lessons learned from her extensive background as she and the Theatre integrate into the Laurel community.

 

Marvin G. Rogers III, The Laurel Mill Playhouse - Director

Marvin has been a North Laurel resident for over thirty years. He attended Western Kentucky University for two years, transferring to the Baltimore Institute to study business and IBM data processing, graduating in 1966.  He has also served four years in the United States Air Force.  Was an accountant for Blue Diamond Trucking Company for five years, and retired from the Baltimore County Bureau of Solid Waste as Assistant Bureau Chief in 1996.  His community involvement includes attending St. Phillips and St. Mary of the Mills, a current member of the American Legion Post 60 Color Guard, and has spent just under two years renovating a 100 year old building on Main Street in order to bring back community theatre to Laurel, now serving as President to the Board of Directors of Laurel Mill Playhouse.  His other interest includes being an avid snow skier, camper, and bluegrass musician.  His goals for the Laurel Board of Trade are to advocate to state and local leaders the need to develop a better climate for commerce which is essential for growth and expansion in the Laurel area, and to develop methods to increase Laurel Board of Trade membership as well as cross promote member business activities.

Joseph M. Tredway- Director 

Joe came to know Laurel in 1961 when his family opened P G Office Supply on Main Street.  Active in the Laurel business community since 1971 when he became full time employee of P G Office Supply and step-laddered his way to Vice President of the family business.  In 2000 P G Office Supply merged with branch Office Supply and Joe was the Account Manager of former PG customer database.
Joe also works as Inspector for Prince George’s County Liquor Control Board.
Joe has been and still is extremely active in the Laurel Community. A member of the Knight’s of Columbus-Laurel, Sons of the American Legion Post 60 in Laurel, Laurel Historical Society, and the Laurel 4th of July Committee.  Joe was also a Board Member for Laurel’s 140th Birthday Committee, and the Laurel Homeless Task Force.

Kelly White, Revere Bank- Director

Ms. White is Assistant Vice President and Sales Manager for Revere Bank.  Kelly White has seven years experience in the Laurel Market.  Prior to joining Revere Bank, she spent four years with Citizens national Bank, where she served Laurel as a Branch Manager.  Kelly has served on the West Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.  She was a member of the Baltimore Washington Chamber of Commerce Women in Business and has served on the board of Mt. Zion Christian Preschool and the Worship Committee of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Highland, Maryland.  Kelly is currently serving the Laurel Thursday Breakfast Chapter of BNI as Secretary-Treasurer. She resides in Columbia with her daughters, Megan and Savannah.
